Identification

2020

160*100 cm

Oil on canvas

Concept:

Individuality is a product of socialization. It is influenced by social ideas, schemes, and attitudes. Self-image is something raised from both cultural and social codes of its time. Environment transforms the body and consciousness continuously. A person tries to fit in the system of social relationships, get the feeling of belonging to a certain circle of people, acquire suitable social status. Identification comes with all described above. Still, the reality we live in is mobile and the identity crisis happens from time to time triggering the process to begin again. A person's life is an endless search for a place to belong in the monochrome space of a city that has no well-defined outlines.

Allowed at home

Concept:

This painting was created during the pandemic when citizens had to isolate themselves. It is a fact that domestic violence cases increased around the world during exactly that period. Society imposes certain rules of behavior on each individual to prevent destructive actions towards others. Nevertheless, a house is a place where a person establishes his/her own rules and there is no need to stay in disguise. Emotional bursts, often not very pleasant ones, are legal in the family. Others see only identical facades of houses that are silent about what is happening behind them. The truth only breaks out when the situation is extreme.

From house to house

Concept:

Personal boundaries form a significant role in human life. They define how this particular human treats himself/herself and which tactics he or she chooses while interacting with others. Personal space helps to build acceptable distance from other individuals and establishes personal boundaries. The child does not have a self-image when in close connection with his parents whether at the level of space or the level of the mind. To become an individual the child should become aware of his or her mindset, and desires facilitate the way to it. Early marriages, in this sense, make the awareness process more complex. Once young people leave the parental home, they find themselves in a new family, where the code of conduct and life philosophy are already established and apply to all members of the family.

The semantic and compositional center of the work is the "blood" thread which unifies the images of two houses. No wonder that when you see the title of the painting in English it has two different words for describing one thing – “From house to house, from home to home”. “House” means a physical construction and “home” is something more emotional, a personal space with which an individual identifies himself.

Concept:

Nature has created many forms of interaction between living organisms. Symbiosis, predation, and parasitism are among them.

Relationships can be built on various models, starting with the "predator — victim" and ending with a mutually beneficial partnership. Nevertheless, no matter what model is there, one thing remains unchanged — at least one of the partners cannot imagine its existence without the other.

Human relationships are represented through biomorphic images of strong stems that are persistently paving the way to the sun, and oppositely there are dark, heavy leeches stuck to them. It often happens that cultural mechanisms position a person to the role of a victim or a symbiote against his or her will, forcing to adapt and adjust, but sometimes the individual itself agrees with his passive role, preferring conformity to independence.

Covering crosses

2020

127*127 cm 2 parts

Oil on canvas

Concept:

Life in society imposes playing by its rules but at the same time, the concept of a social norm is highly-mobile and arbitrary. Poorly functioning social institutions add to the confusion: what is allowed to one social group is forbidden to another. Such situations make individuals feel lost and unaware of how they can dispose of their bodies. Legal liability, social networks censorship and public condemnation for showing particular body parts coexist along with sexual objectification. Society dictates what is considered indecent to demonstrate today and when it must be covered with a censoring cross.

Oil, pencil on canvas

Concept:

This painting was produced several days before the exhibition opening, right in this hall. It presents the result of the artist's reflections during the creation of the "Silence" project and serves as a concluding remark. Each object of the exhibition vigorously demonstrates the authors' negative attitude to the problem of keeping the veil of silence over existing problems. Nevertheless, it is just one opinion out of a thousand. In this work, Katerina Konyukhova examines different strategies of people's interaction with the claimed real-life social problems.

Different completeness level of the eight fragments of the canvas illustrates the possible levels of people's involvement in these problems: some of them deny their existence; some acknowledge but refuse to change anything; others try to change the established order.
